El Mago was shot almost entirely in Palm Beach. Its two main locations were the 1916 Court House and Saint Anne Catholic Church. El Mago, a silent film, takes place in Cuba during the 1920s. The 1916 court house provided the perfect venue for most of the film. From the opening scene one can see the beautiful marble stair case with a guard escorting a young mysterious man. The beautiful scene is one of the many scenes shot in Palm Beach 1916 historical court house. The court house provided beautiful lighting and atmosphere to the dark and mysterious film. The last scene of the film was shot right outside of the courthouse, a most magical scene.
The beautiful St. Anne Catholic Church was the sight for one of the most important scenes of the film where the main character of the film, Maria Cristina goes to the church for guidance. The altar, stained glass, and saints of this historical church are beautifully captured during the scene.
El Mago was produced by Ana Rodriguez a Cuban American pianist and composer that wished to have her composition presented in a very unique way. What started out as a music video turned out to be a short film, that not only show cases her compositions but the beautiful venues in Palm Beach. The film was inspired by the tittle of the pieces of her original piano compositions, Suite Santi Spiritus. Sancti Spiritus is a small town in Cuba. The individual titles of the Suite served as the inspiration for the characters and the story.
El Mago has won best art film in the Monaco International Film Festival, and best original score. It will have its U.S. premiere as part of the Miami International Film Festival March 12, 2015 at the Tower Theater as part of Ghosts Stories. All of the cast and crew of El Mago are Latinos.
